Kevad 2023 jätkub ja sel aastal olen pidanud oma sõnu sööma. Hooldusvaba aed peab ise hakkama saama, lihtsalt ei kasta ja kõik. Sel kevadel on aga tulnud valida, kas kõik kooleb põua käes lihtsalt maha või voolikud välja ja vutt-vutt-vutt mööda aeda ringi jooksma. Teoorias oleks pidanud lumesulamisveest ju jätkuma, aga päike ja tuul on oma töö teinud ja juba olen pidanud kahjusid kokku lugema. Suurim neist on värskeltistutatud mänd Watereri, kel vist halbade asjaolude kokkulangemisel polnud väga lootustki (juurepall potis oli suure puu kohta praktiliselt olematu).

This spring, however, you have to choose whether everything will simply die in the drought, or take out the hoses and hop-hop-hop around the garden. In theory, there should have been enough snowmelt water, but the sun and wind have done their work and I have already had to count the damages. The largest of them is the newly planted Watereri pine, which probably didn’t have much hope when the bad circumstances came together (the root ball in the pot was practically non-existent for a large tree).

Just don’t buy container plants in early spring, they are probably freshly dug up from the field. Wait a month, they will do the work of it for you at the nursery and the price will be the same.

Muruniiduhooaeg algas varakult, robot vehkis “viljaringe” teha. Priimulad, tulbid ja teised kevadised õisejad võtsid lumesulamisveest viimast ja üllatusena hakkas koos kevadise emajuurega õitsema ka juulis õitsema pidanud emajuur Frei Hybrida. Primroses, tulips and other spring flowering plants took the last of the snowmelt water, and surprisingly, the gentiana Frei Hybrida, which should have bloomed in July, started to bloom together with the gentiana verna. Either I got the wrong plant or it will bloom until July, I can’t tell. She is still beautiful.

Tänu põuale on ka põõsaste õied sel kevadel kuidagi nirud. Rododest ei maksa rääkidagi. Algatuseks kastan istutusalad korralikult ära ja siis katan multshiga lootuses, et see hoiab veidigi pinnases niiskust kinni.

Thanks to the drought, the flowers of the bushes are also somewhat poor this spring. There is no need to talk about the rhododendron. To begin with, I water the planting areas and then cover with mulch in the hope that it will hold some moisture in the soil.

The astilbes did not withstand this and had to start the growth all over again. Fortunately, the rock garden, which we have also had to water, provides springtime eye candy.

Kui kevad nii jätkub, siis tuleb hooldusvabast aiast unistamine ära unustada ja hankida kastmissüsteem. Või siis liduda poodi lavendleid kokku ostma. Neile ei pruugi meie talved meeldida… Tähklavendel on aga talve kenasti üle elanud ja rõõmustab silmnähtavalt põua üle.

If the spring continues like this, then you have to forget about dreaming of a maintenance-free garden and get an irrigation system. Or go to the store to buy lavender. They may not like our winters… However, English lavender has survived the winter nicely and is obviously happy about the drought.
